24 Players Compete for Nigeria Squad Ahead Women’s T20i Invitational

Twenty-four players are currently in camp in Benin City, Edo State, as they compete for places in Nigeria’s final squad ahead of the Nigeria Cricket Federation Women’s Invitational Tournament.

The players are undergoing preparations at a high-performance training camp organised by the Nigeria Cricket Federation as the national team gets ready for the fifth edition of the tournament scheduled to take place at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos.

Eight of the players in camp are seeking their first appearance for Nigeria’s women’s national cricket team, known as the Female Yellow Greens, while the remaining sixteen players are regular members who have represented the team since at least 2022.

The players will compete for fourteen available spots in the final squad that will travel to Lagos for the tournament.

This year’s competition has been expanded into a five-nation tournament featuring Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and the South Africa Women’s Under‑19 Cricket Team, which will make its first appearance in the event.

The tournament initially started as a bilateral series between Nigeria and Rwanda but has expanded in participation and competitive scope over the years.

Participating teams are expected to arrive in Lagos before the start of the tournament, with matches scheduled throughout the competition period before the final fixtures and team departures at the end of the event.

The competition will also include youth cricket clinics and stakeholder engagement activities aimed at strengthening grassroots participation and promoting the development of cricket in Nigeria.

Nigeria won the tournament for the first time in 2023 before losing the title in 2024, while Rwanda previously won the competition in 2022.
