Nigeria Joins UN Resolution Supporting Ukraine

Nigeria joined 106 other members of the United Nations General Assembly in voting to support a resolution advocating for lasting peace in Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion. The resolution, titled “Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine,” was adopted by a vote tally of 107 in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions. It called for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, the exchange of prisoners of war, and the return of civilians forcibly transferred, including children.

The General Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. Ukrainian officials underscored that the full-scale invasion violated international law and highlighted the urgent need for international support to ensure security and accountability. The UN Secretary-General emphasized the devastating humanitarian impact of the war, noting that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict, with 2025 witnessing the largest number of civilian casualties since the war began.

Diplomatic discussions at the Assembly highlighted deep divisions among member states. Ukrainian officials rejected territorial concessions and demanded stronger sanctions, air defense support, and binding security guarantees, warning that failure to confront aggression would destabilize global security. The Russian delegation argued that negotiations must address the conflict’s root causes, maintaining that European actions had fueled tensions while ignoring diplomatic engagement.
