Edo APC Chair Dismisses Fears of One-Party State
The acting chairman of the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarret Tenebe, has rejected claims that Nigeria is trending toward a one-party state under President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in Benin, Tenebe said it is the responsibility of opposition parties to strengthen themselves, not the ruling party. He emphasized that the constitution guarantees freedom of association and dismissed concerns about potential party collapse.

“It is not the duty of the ruling party to protect the opposition. Opposition parties must be formidable on their own. If anyone chooses to join us, we will welcome them. I am not concerned even if all parties merge into the APC,” he said.
Tenebe also addressed rumours of a rift between himself and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, former governor and state party leader, insisting that any differences were limited to internal party primaries. “We campaigned together, won together, and continue to work together. There are no cracks,” he added.
He noted that he has been serving as acting chairman under a caretaker arrangement and will assume the role substantively if confirmed. Tenebe said the party’s focus is on supporting the state government to deliver on its promises.
“Elections are a collective effort. The party is central to governance, and it is our responsibility to ensure that policies and manifesto commitments are implemented,” he said.
Regarding national concerns about economic hardship and insecurity, Tenebe defended the administration, arguing that many of the current challenges predate President Tinubu’s tenure. He highlighted measures being taken to improve security and stabilize the economy.
On preparations for the 2027 general election, Tenebe confirmed that arrangements are underway to facilitate voting for Edo residents and revealed plans to formally welcome defecting Labour Party and PDP local government chairmen into the APC. He concluded that the opposition is effectively weakened.
