UK Will Not Bow to Trump Pressure Over Greenland — Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the United Kingdom will not yield to pressure from United States President Donald Trump regarding the future of Greenland, stressing that Britain’s position is grounded in principle and international norms.

Addressing lawmakers in parliament, Starmer said the UK would not compromise its values or stance on Greenland despite threats of economic retaliation. He added that he would host Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in London as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement.

Trump has reportedly threatened to impose tariffs on Britain and other European countries that oppose his position on Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Starmer also faced criticism in parliament from opposition figures over Trump’s public condemnation of the UK’s agreement with Mauritius on the Chagos Islands. Under the deal, Britain is set to transfer sovereignty of the archipelago to Mauritius while leasing the US–UK military base there for a long-term period.

Responding to the controversy, Starmer said the remarks from Trump were deliberately aimed at pressuring him to abandon Britain’s position. He noted that comments on Greenland and the Chagos Islands were made together to underline that pressure.

He maintained that Greenland’s future should be determined solely by Greenland and Denmark, describing the issue as one with far-reaching global implications.
