Tinubu Pledges to Turn Former Conflict Zones into Thriving Economic Centres

Tinubu on Security and Economic Transformation

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming parts of the country previously troubled by insecurity into vibrant centres of economic activity. He made this pledge during the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Appeal Emblem at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu highlighted progress recorded under ongoing security reforms, noting increased surrender of insurgents, the neutralisation of several key terrorist leaders, enhanced joint military operations, and stronger maritime security. He said the Ministry of Defence is developing a programme to reclaim ungoverned territories across the country through the deployment of retired military personnel with specialised experience. According to him, the initiative is aimed at restoring government authority in vulnerable areas and stimulating new economic activity.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of both serving and retired military personnel, citing ongoing efforts to upgrade military barracks, enhance troop allowances, strengthen healthcare delivery, and improve pension verification processes. He praised the courage and sacrifices of Nigeria’s armed forces in confronting terrorism, insurgency, banditry, oil theft, piracy, and other security threats, adding that their efforts have restored stability in many communities.

Tinubu stressed that Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed every January 15, remains an important moment for the nation to honour soldiers who lost their lives defending the country. He described it as a national obligation to support the families of fallen heroes and to care for those who continue to serve in difficult conditions.

At the event, the President announced a ₦200 million donation, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio pledged ₦100 million and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, contributed ₦20 million. Tinubu also unveiled the “Thank a Soldier” QR code platform, a digital initiative that enables citizens to send messages of appreciation to serving troops.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace unity, emphasising that the nation’s diversity is an asset that must be protected. The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, ministers, and heads of security agencies.
