Maresca Warns Against Messi Comparisons After Estevao Wonder Goal

Chelsea’s young Brazilian talent Estevao scored a stunning solo goal in a 3-0 Champions League victory over Barcelona at Stamford Bridge. The 18-year-old winger, who has already netted 10 goals this season for club and country, beat two defenders before firing into the roof of the net. Chelsea’s other goals came from an own goal by Jules Kounde and a late strike by Liam Delap.

The Spanish side were reduced to 10 men late in the second half when captain Ronald Araujo was sent off for a second yellow card.

Manager Enzo Maresca cautioned against comparing Estevao to Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, stressing that such expectations place unnecessary pressure on young players. He noted that Estevao’s strike reminded him more of a goal the forward had scored for Palmeiras against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in July.

Maresca emphasised the importance of allowing Estevao and fellow prodigy Lamine Yamal to enjoy their football without overwhelming comparisons. “At 18, they need to arrive at the training ground happy, not burdened by talk of Messi or Ronaldo,” he explained.

Estevao described the night as the best moment of his career so far, expressing gratitude for the support of Chelsea fans and his desire to continue making them proud. “From the moment I arrived here, I felt such a connection with the fans. I’m just so happy that I could score for them and make them happy. I hope to keep making them happy and score more goals for them,” he said.

Maresca added that despite Estevao’s impressive form, he would not feel pressured to play him in every match, stressing that team selection always depends on the game plan.
