Tinubu Embarks on South Africa, Angola Visits for G20 and AU–EU Summits

President Bola Tinubu is set to begin a two-nation diplomatic trip today, with stops in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola. His first engagement will be the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, scheduled for November 22–23 at the Expo Centre. Following this, he will proceed to Angola for the AU–EU Summit taking place from November 24–25.

The Nigerian leader was invited by South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, who chairs this year’s G20. The summit, themed “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”, marks the first time the G20 is being hosted on African soil. Discussions will focus on inclusive and sustainable growth, debt and development financing, disaster-risk reduction, climate action, energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work, and artificial intelligence.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G20 to advance his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and address issues of regional peace, security, and development. The African Union, now a full member of the G20 alongside the European Union, is expected to play a prominent role in Johannesburg.

After the G20, Tinubu will join other heads of state and government in Luanda for the AU–EU Summit, which will bring together leaders, innovators, and civil society to deliberate on climate change, inclusive development, infrastructure, the digital economy, creative industries, manufacturing, and agribusiness.

He will be accompanied by senior officials, including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance and the Economy, Solid Minerals, and Trade and Investment, as well as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency. The Presidency confirmed that Tinubu will return to Nigeria after the conclusion of both meetings.

This trip marks Tinubu’s third official visit to South Africa since assuming office, while it will be his first visit to Angola as President.
