Luis Enrique Eyes Key Club World Cup Clash vs Real Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique says his side is relishing the challenge of facing Real Madrid in the Club World Cup semi-final, calling the matchup “meaningful” and “motivating,” while steering clear of discussions about his former star, Kylian Mbappe.

Speaking ahead of the clash set for Wednesday at MetLife Stadium just outside New York, Enrique highlighted the significance of meeting Madrid at such a high level of competition.

“Facing Real Madrid is always something special,” Enrique said. “Playing this match means we’ve done something right so far. It’s a great opportunity, and we’re excited for it.”

PSG head into the tournament on the heels of their historic UEFA Champions League triumph—achieved just months after Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid. Enrique, who coached the forward in his final season at PSG, described their past as “behind us now,” downplaying any tension.

“This game stands out not because of the headlines, but because it’s a semi-final that puts us within reach of another trophy. That’s where our focus lies,” he added.

PSG will be missing defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, both suspended after being sent off in the quarter-final against Bayern Munich.

For Real Madrid, the match marks a new beginning under head coach Xabi Alonso, who recently took charge following a transition period at the club.

“It’s a little early to judge Madrid under Xabi Alonso,” Enrique said. “But he has everything it takes to succeed. Playing against Madrid is always a unique experience, and I look forward to it every time.”

Due to weather-related delays, Alonso was unable to attend the pre-match press conference, with Real Madrid arriving late from their Florida training base.

The winner of the highly anticipated semi-final will face Chelsea in Sunday’s final. The English club booked their spot after a 2-0 win over Fluminense in the other semi-final match.
