President Tinubu to Address Nigeria on Democracy Day, June 12

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Wednesday, June 12, 2025, address the nation during a special joint session of the National Assembly as part of this year’s Democracy Day celebrations.

The address is scheduled to take place at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, where both the Senate and the House of Representatives will convene to receive the President.

The Federal Government has declared June 12 a public holiday to commemorate 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria. June 12 was designated as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in 2018 to honor the memory of the late Chief MKO Abiola, widely regarded as the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election.

This year’s theme, “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development,” underscores the significance of the day as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic ideals and national progress. The Senate, ahead of the celebrations, is also considering a bill to institutionalize the President’s annual Democracy Day address to the National Assembly and to designate the Assembly complex as the formal venue for all future presidential inaugurations.

The joint session will begin at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu expected to speak around noon. His address is anticipated to touch on key national issues, ongoing reforms, and a renewed call for unity and development. The event will be broadcast live on national television and radio stations, including the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

This marks a significant moment in the country’s democratic journey, symbolizing not only the resilience of Nigeria’s institutions but also a stronger executive-legislative relationship.
