Tinubu Greenlights New Federal Universities in Osun and Ekiti States

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law two bills establishing new federal universities in Osun and Ekiti states.

The newly created institutions are the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in a statement released Thursday. “The institutions will serve as training grounds for developing agriculture, science, and technology professionals and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy,” Onanuga stated.

President Tinubu emphasized that the universities will address educational needs, foster research, and contribute to national economic growth. This latest move brings the total number of approved federal universities to 63, complementing 63 state universities and 149 private ones already recognized by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Earlier this month, Tinubu approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State. The new institution is expected to focus on environmental studies, technology, and sustainable development, addressing longstanding regional concerns related to pollution and resource management.
