PTI SUG Inauguration: Dr. Onoji Charges New Executives On Accountability, Peace, And Leadership

The newly inaugurated Students Union Government (SUG) of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, has been urged to uphold accountability, dialogue, and peace as they lead the student body for the 2024/2025 academic year.

During the inauguration ceremony held at the Institute’s Council Chamber, Dr. Samuel E. Onoji, Principal and Chief Executive of PTI, addressed the new leaders, emphasizing the importance of effective leadership.

Represented by Dr. (Mrs.) Tina Isichei, Director of Research and Development at PTI, Dr. Onoji urged the SUG executives to prioritize maintaining peace and serenity within the Institute.

“It is a privilege to be elected as the student’s representative, and you should make it count. Any issues you have with the management should be resolved through dialogue, not through insults or protests,”
Dr. Onoji said.

He emphasized that accountability is crucial, especially when managing student funds, urging the new leaders to handle their responsibilities with transparency.

The PTI Chief Executive reminded the SUG officials about the importance of abiding by the Institute’s policies, particularly its zero-tolerance stance on cultism, examination malpractice, and other social vices.

He called on the student leaders to champion these values and create a conducive environment for learning.

Dr. Onoji also addressed the issue of examination postponements, stressing the negative impact on final-year students who, due to delays, risk missing graduation deadlines and opportunities such as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and timely entry into the job market.

“Examination postponement should be a thing of the past,” he urged, encouraging the new SUG to ensure that classes and exams proceed as scheduled.

In his speech, Dr. Onoji emphasized that the role of student leadership is not one of bullying or intimidation, but of service to others, with a commitment to fulfilling the needs of the student body.

Responding on behalf of the SUG, the newly elected President, Comr. Temisan Collins Oghenevwede, assured the Institute’s management that his leadership would work towards creating a peaceful, protest-free campus.

He pledged to collaborate with the administration to uphold the values of accountability, peace, and discipline within the student community.

With these commitments, the newly elected student leaders look set to begin their tenure with a focus on positive change and a stronger relationship with the Institute’s management.
