Tinubu Defends Tax Reform Bills, Advocates Collaboration Between Arms of Government

President Bola Tinubu has defended his four tax reform bills currently under review by the National Assembly, asserting that they are designed to increase national revenue.

He stressed the importance of fostering collaboration rather than conflict between the executive and legislative branches to drive the nation forward.

Represented by Dr. Joseph Ochoku, Director General of the Nigeria Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, President Tinubu spoke on Monday in Ibadan during the 7th annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and the 75th posthumous birthday commemoration of the late former Oyo State governor. The event was held at the University of Ibadan and organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation in partnership with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies at the university.

The roundtable, titled “Legislative Oversight in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects”, brought together political and academic stakeholders.

Through Dr. Ochoku, President Tinubu explained, “My administration is determined to maintain a harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative branches of government. Despite occasional disagreements, we recognize that effective governance is a shared duty. Collaboration—not confrontation—should guide our approach as we work to improve the lives of our citizens.”

He further stated that the tax reforms would improve tax collection, enhance revenue streams, and promote fair resource distribution. He added that these reforms are vital to achieving economic growth, creating a fairer and sustainable Nigeria, and attracting foreign investments.

President Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s commitment to press freedom, transparency, and ensuring that the roles of the different government branches remain free of political bias, misinformation, and division.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau praised the National Assembly’s decision to name its library after President Tinubu, highlighting that this is the first time in Nigeria’s history that a former senator has gone on to become the nation’s President—and his wife also previously served in the National Assembly.

Barau said, “We chose to name the library in honor of President Tinubu because of his role in the National Assembly and his historical contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey. Legislative oversight is vital to ensuring transparency, accountability, and proper use of public funds.”

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also weighed in, emphasizing that legislative oversight would benefit from strong cooperation between the executive and legislative arms. Bamidele underlined the importance of respecting the principles of separation of powers and intergovernmental collaboration.

Prominent figures at the event included Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State; and Julius Ihonvbere, Leader of the House of Representatives.
