Tinubu Lands in Brazil for G20 Summit

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit.

Tinubu landed on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (3:03 a.m. Nigerian time on Monday) and was welcomed by Ambassador Breno Costa from Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations.

He is accompanied by several Nigerian officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; the Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

The Nigerian president is expected to engage in bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, focusing on advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who assumed the G20 presidency in December 2023, is hosting the summit, which will run from November 18 to November 19. His term as president of the G20 concludes on November 30, 2024.

The summit, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will tackle critical issues including economic, social, and environmental sustainability, as well as global governance reform. Key topics will also include global temperature rise, the digital economy, and the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict. The summit will also address the escalating tensions between the United States and China.

The annual summit serves as the forum where heads of state and government endorse agreements reached during the year and chart paths forward for addressing global challenges.

Tinubu is attending the summit as an invited representative of the African Union, alongside representatives of the European Union. The Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Areias, delivered an invitation from President Lula to President Tinubu on August 29, 2024. One of the central goals of the Brazilian G20 presidency is addressing food security to combat hunger, poverty, and inequality, with a focus on eradicating extreme poverty by 2030.
