Nigeria Calls for Two-State Solution to Israel-Palestine Conflict

It is with a profound sense of duty that I stand before you today as we collectively work toward ending the Palestinian conflict and realizing the vision of a two-state solution. This goal is not only essential but urgent.

The conflict in Palestine has endured for far too long, bringing immeasurable suffering to countless lives. As representatives of nations that hold justice, dignity, and the sanctity of human life in the highest regard, we have a shared moral responsibility to bring this conflict to an immediate end.

It is not enough to issue empty condemnations. The world must act decisively to end Israeli aggression in Gaza, which has persisted for far too long. No political goal, military strategy, or security concern should ever justify the continued loss of innocent lives.

In a world governed by a rules-based international order, every state has the right to self-defense. However, self-defense must always be exercised with proportionality, in accordance with global legal, diplomatic, and moral frameworks. The lives, hopes, and futures of an entire civilian population must never be treated as mere collateral damage.

Humanitarian aid is not a privilege—it is a fundamental human right. No individual, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or religion, should be deprived of access to aid in times of crisis. We must also ensure that humanitarian workers on the frontlines are protected and able to carry out their vital missions in Gaza.

The two-state solution is not merely a diplomatic aspiration—it represents a vision of peace, founded on the principles of equality, mutual recognition, and the right of both Israelis and Palestinians to self-determination.

Achieving this vision requires an unwavering commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and an honest understanding of history. We are all aware that this conflict did not begin on October 7, 2023. Its resolution will require principled compromise and a deep appreciation of the broader historical context.

This conflict, rooted in one of the world’s most historically significant regions, has a visceral impact that reverberates far and wide. The images of violence, broadcast on millions of smartphones across the globe, have a corrosive effect that must be addressed. We cannot afford to delay in seeking new pathways to peace.

Nigeria has always stood at the forefront of peace and cooperation among nations. Our own experiences, both domestically and regionally, have taught us that identity politics cannot replace the respect for diversity and nuance in resolving conflicts.

The path to reconciliation will undoubtedly be challenging. But through honest and open dialogue, we can foster understanding and pave the way for lasting peace. The international community has the opportunity to bring fresh ideas and new approaches to this enduring challenge. It is our responsibility to engage in this dialogue with sincerity and resolve, fully recognizing the complexities faced by both sides.

Let us not forget the human toll of this conflict. We must center the voices of the families who have been torn apart, the children who grow up in fear, and the communities who long for peace and stability. It is our duty to advocate for their rights and work toward a future where their dreams are no longer stifled by the horrors of war.

I call upon all of us to unite in solidarity, to stand firm in our commitment to peace, and to work toward a future of peaceful coexistence, free from fear and violence. Together, we can make the vision of a two-state solution a reality—one that holds the promise of a better tomorrow for all.

Finally, Nigeria calls for the establishment of a dedicated Secretariat composed of selected Heads of Government or their senior representatives. This body would travel globally to canvass support, oversee the implementation of the Summit’s resolutions, and provide regular reports to the joint leadership of the OIC and the Arab League, until permanent peace is achieved.
